You are the Love of my Life
And the Life in my love.
Every love poem I write to You
Has been plagiarized from Your Heart.
Though words cannot contain You or express You,
You have endless names
So that anyone who will
Can know the satisfaction of calling on You.
But Named or not,
We cannot beckon You to come where You’ve never left.
You are always here.
The places we go where we cannot find You do not exist.
As the Psalmist wrote,
“When I awake, I am still with You.”
Am I still with You?
I must be.
Or I would not be writing words that only Love can speak.
Am I awake?
I must be.
Or I am dreaming the only thing worth dreaming—
That You are the Love of my Life
And the Life in my love.

The Wages of Skin
I’m sorry I apologized
When I was just being me
I was just a slave
Who falsely thought I was free
But now that I’m seeing more clearly
This is what I meant to say
Kiss my grits
And get the H-E double hockey stick out my way
I think you get my point
Without me going to extremes
I could say it a little harder
But it wouldn’t change an ounce of what it means
Besides if my dead grandmother were here
And heard me talk to you like that
She’d slap the taste right out my mouth
And give all my apologies back
See, the worst things in life are often inherited
Taught to fear in the name of survival
Illusions of superiority
Cloaked in the excuse that we’re all tribal
We say those before us committed the crimes
But we choose to pay the price
So when we accept the earnings of an unjust cause
The effect is our souls being sacrificed
Me
Emerging from Nowhere
Participating in everything
Desiring Nothing
I walk Alone
With everyone
Love Punk
I’m afraid to tell you how much I love you
Because you don’t love you more
Which makes my love for you seem too much
And you refuse to be outscored
So instead of loving you more than me
You try to make me love you less
Thinking how can I love what you don’t love
Which leaves both of us depressed
So in order to protect us from me and you
I hide my love for you in the future
So we can feel we learned what we already knew
Since you only run when I pursue you
That’s why I leave so I can stay
Creating space just to get close
Believing I can love you all I want
Once you learn to love you most

Maker in the Middle
In the center of all things
Is the One Who is All
From the infinitely large
To the infinitely small
Nowhere not the center
Even that which you call edge
Split the atom and there is fullness
There’s no space that you can hedge
There is no private matter
As far as matter is concerned
In fact matter doesn’t matter
Once it’s spiritually discerned
Reality is Oneness
This thought called two has never been
It’s the illusion of separation
Denying the truth of what’s within
We live, move, and have our being
In the One Place all things Be
Once we receive the “I” that sees this
There’s nothing ever more to see

The Soul You Rob Is Your Own
Eyes filled with tears
Heart so full
Can’t say it’s spilled milk
Seeing all this bull
Everywhere soul robbers
Work to dig our graves
Offer carrot stick freedom
Keep us unseen slaves
Two faced leaders
Both mouths lie
Stick those needles
In the public eye
So we see nothing
But we don’t know why
Place our hopes in the illusion
They are on our side
But what I see lately
Merely comes to this
In a win-lose world
Someone will be missed
And in a rank based system
You know who it’ll be
Those who don’t pass muster
And those who look like me
But my tears aren’t for pity
For those who play that role
It’s for those who kill worlds
Trying to find their souls
Because in the grand scheme of things
Nothing’s here for the keeping
This is a seed planting realm
So we can live our own reapings
Forever!

Take This Life (w/ Lyrics)
Updated on December 4, 2022
I am grateful that after more than a 4 year journey, Take This Life has finally made its way out into the world. It has been a blessing to me. I hope it blesses everyone it comes in contact with because you are made to shine. #makeitlight

I’m using Take This Life to create a #makeitlight challenge to highlight good being done in the world. If you happen to decide to share it online, can you use the #makeitlight tag?
(When you shine your Light it isn’t just for you.
It’s for everybody else that’s been watching what you do.)
Take this life
Make it right
Take this life
Make it Light
To see…
You ever had those thoughts that wouldn’t go away?
They’re runnin’ though your mind like every single day.
Wake up in the mornin’
Get on your knees and pray
Don’t believe it works
But you do it anyway
That’s what it’s like when you feelin’ hopeless
Lookin’ at your life and you’ve got no focus
You say, “It gets better.”
Swear to God you know this
But you caught up in the mix
Don’t where your flow is
This is the way of the American dream
We think we see clearly
But it isn’t what it seems
Addicted to consumption
So we livin’ like we fiends
Only find meaning
When we get a bunch of things
Sooo…
Take this life
Make it right
Take this life
Make it Light
To see…
You know the Way
That’s what they say
That’s why I pray
To shine like the Day
Sooo…
Take this life
Make it right
Take this life
Make it Light
To see…
Here’s a little something
I’m getting off my chest
It’s been a long time
Since last I confessed
I denied you
Thinking I’d get the rest
But life without you
Is a life that’s a mess
The best of me
Is messin’ with the rest of me
It’s testin’ me
At least until I get to see
I’m blessed to be
Livin’ with you next to me
‘Cause life within you
Is for X to see
You see
They say you know the Way
I’m inclined to believe it
Though never in my life
Have I seen one to achieve it
You told us how to do it
I’ll be shocked
If we gon’ heed it
Then we looking all surprised
By the fact that we defeated
Soo…
Take this life
Make it right
Take this life
Make it Light
To see
You know the Way
That’s what they say
That’s why I pray
To shine like the Day
Sooo…
Take this life
Make it right
Take this life
Make it Light
To see…
When you shine your light
It isn’t just for you
It’s for everybody else
That’s been watchin’ what you do
You can talk that talk
But the walk shows what is true
Are you a hypocrite
Or the proud and the few?
That’s the kind of question
I ask myself daily
Trying to get back to my roots
As if my name was Alex Haley
You don’t like my style
But never will you play me
‘Cause I’m gon’ shine my light
Till the day that they take me
You say I know the way
‘Cause if you do, I’m supposed to
I’m glad you chose me
Even when I hadn’t chose you
The world is out of order
And everybody knows it
How’s a nation under you
When all you are, it opposes
If they gon’ be that Pharaoh
Then I’m gon’ be that Moses
They don’t want to see us shine
‘Cause when we do it exposes
So I’m gon’ keep speaking
Til everybody knows this
It’s when we turn to you
That we see where the flow is
You know the Way
That’s what they say
That’s why I pray
To shine like the Day
Sooo…
Take this life
Make it right
Take this life
Make it Light
To see…
Below is the original performance of the song that I did as a pastor.
Below is my final sermon as a pastor where in my farewell, I remind the community that, as the song Take This Life says, “YOU KNOW THE WAY”. The message ends with Asha singing, Change Gonna Come by Sam Cooke.
Repairers of the Breach
There is nowhere God is not
Even in what doesn’t last
God gives all things a future
And is not shackled by the past
In our weakness strength is known
And through it we know each other
So through it we are all made One
Each a sister and a brother
So let us see our humanness
Through the eyes of the One who made it
That we might be repairers of the breach
For the world we’ve co-Created

The Truths Cannot Die
The next time that you kill us
Remember we never really die
Suppressing us won’t free you
Because Truth can’t sustain a lie
I know our presence scares you
We make you feel unsure
Nothing can quite prepare you
For seeing your prejudice impure
You’ve been taught we’re inconvenient
You try to hide us from your view
But locking us up doesn’t keep us out
Since you can’t get away from you
Your history of violence
Towards those who look like me
Has left so many people silent
That we barely know how to be
You say that we are valued
And yet you try to hide the Truth
But there’s no escaping what’s evident
We are the living proof
But where does this knowledge leave us
For too many it ushers shame
The one thing no one wants to feel
Because we can’t escape the pain
See that’s not what we’re seeking
What we want to share is hope
But in our face you see a mirror
And hang the image from a rope
Your guilt too, is not of value
It’s just denial in different dress
Which leads to justification
Which fosters anger and unrest
So what is the solution?
Where do we go from here?
How can we live by a better Way,
When we hold on to our fear?
The answer is we cannot
We have to let love win
Or die in the darkness that we choose
And then do it all again
Fighting Over Crumbs
All things to All things
Nothing is denied
But we’re fighting over bread crumbs
Because someone believed a lie
So now we kill each other
In our constant pursuit of more
We believe we are “consumers”
Because we don’t know what we’re for
Infinite Creation
Nothing more or less
But instead destruction follows us
When we put us to the test
Addicted to the thought of conquering
Sixty steps till we unlearn
That the truth of life is obvious
When we’re not looking for our turn
In the mean time there’s confusion
We’re told we have to choose a side
Contests between “us” and “them”
Where the winner doesn’t die
But what if someone told you
That everything is yours
And everything is everyone’s
And no one’s keeping score
The House is not divided
Upon the Rock is where it stands
Never to be shaken
By unreasonable demands
But because it can’t be broken
It won’t resist what it is we do
We can lie all the hell we want to
Because all of it’s untrue
Though we deny the Absolute
It simply continues as it is
Fully realized. No need to strive.
For it’s the life that we all Live
It’s the Bread that’s not devoured
Though we eat it to our fill
Diminishing every sense of loss
Like nothing ever will
